North Dorset Railway 

      Shillingstone Station

North Dorset Railway is a standard gauge heritage railway based at Shillingstone Station, near Blandford Forum, in the heart of rural Dorset. The station was part of the much-loved Somerset & Dorset Railway which opened in 1863 and closed in 1966 in the wake of Dr Beeching’s report. 

Restoration work was started by a small group of dedicated volunteers in the late 1990s who set up a charity to restore this part of the railway and re-open a section of the former line. Since then, great progress has been made, supported by over 500 members, many of whom are active volunteers, both at the station and behind the scenes. 

We are well on the way to becoming an operational heritage railway and anticipate running passenger-carrying trains over half a mile of restored track soon. Meanwhile, there is much to see and do at Shillingstone Station.

We are open all year round on Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays and some Bank Holidays from 10.00am to 4.00pm and entry is free.
