It was 60 years ago today ...
DATE POSTED: 09 Mar 2026Despite grey skies, Shillingstone Station was in fine spirits over the weekend, marking the 60th anniversary since the ‘closure’ of the station. Visitors came from far and wide to join the commemoration, with Project 62 inviting families to climb aboard their restored locomotive and admire three steam traction engines and a selection of vintage vehicles, while North Dorset Railway laid on guided tours of the station and signal box, and also of the newly extended track, pointing out the environmental enhancements (which recently attracted the attention of an otter).

Entry to the station was free, as usual, but visitors donated generously, the always popular café did a roaring trade, and the event made it onto BBC local news as the 'good news' story.
